Geografisch gesehen gehören sie zu Afrika und zu Makaronesien.<br /> Die Inselgruppe besteht aus drei größeren und 18 kleineren Inseln vulkanischen Ursprungs. Der Archipel setzt sich aus zwei Inselgruppen zusammen, die etwa 15 Kilometer voneinander entfernt liegen:<br /> *Der Nordostgruppe mit Selvagem Grande (2,45 km²), der größten Insel der Ilhas Selvagens, und den drei Inselchen Ilhéu Sinho, Palheiro do Mar und Palheiro de Terra. Höchster Gipfel ist der Pico da Atalaia auf Selvagem Grande mit 163 Metern.<br /> *Der Südwestgruppe mit den Inseln Selvagem Pequena (0,30 km²) und Fora (0,08 km²) sowie zahlreichen, teilweise sehr kleinen Eilanden, etwa Alto, Comprido, Redondo und den Norte Inseln. Höchste Erhebung ist der Pico do Veado mit 49 Metern auf Selvagem Pequena.<br /> <br /> Das ganze Gebiet steht unter Naturschutz und darf nur mit Bewilligung von der Parkverwaltung befahren werden.<br /> <br /> <br /> == Ankerplätze ==<br /> Ankern ist an einigen in der Seekarte ausgewiesenen Plätzen möglich.<br /> <br /> == Bewilligung ==<br /> Die Erlaubinss das Gebiet zu befahren und betreten wird durch die Behörde IP-RAM (Institute for Forestry and Nature Conservation) vereilt.<br /> Folgende Angaben sind nötig:<br /> * Schiffsname<br /> * Registrierungsnummer<br /> * Anzahl Personen die an Land gehen<br /> * Name des Skippers<br /> * Besuchszeitraum<br /> * Grund des Besuchs<br /> <br /> Diese Angaben in einem Mail an ifcn@madeira.gov.pt stellen den Anfang des Bewilligungsprocedere dar.</div>
